Why we started Prickly Pear

Board certified electrologists and dynamic husband & wife team, Roroc & Kelley

We’re a husband and wife team, and in 2019, we had climbed higher on the corporate ladder than we ever thought possible, but we were burnt out and struggling to find inspiration in jobs that most people would love.

Then our parents passed away suddenly, just six days apart, and our whole world came to a sudden stop. We were deeply saddened, but it prompted us to start talking about what it would take to live our best lives — lives where we had lots of flexibility for our family, made more memories with people we love, and had opportunities to make a genuine difference in the world.

And randomly (or maybe not so), it was around this time, we started seeing a professional electrologist. At first, it was just for hair removal. As we rolled into our late 40s, we’ve noticed a lot more new but unwanted (and sometimes downright embarrassing) hair sprouting everywhere — our chins, ears, lips, etc. Then one day, our electrologist offered something us new and unexpected — to remove what our dermatologist had called the ”barnacles of life” — those little benign but irritating bumps on the skin (milia, moles, keratosis, etc.) that over time were multiplying and aging us.

Today, we’re astonished by how much we’ve been transformed by electrolysis; it has brought unexpected joy to our lives to have smoother, softer skin. We feel younger and more confident than we have in years, and our only regret is that we wish we would’ve known about electrology sooner!

It was out of these extraordinary experiences that we decided to launch Prickly Pear Electrolysis & Skincare.

We took this huge leap of faith because we believe EVERYONE deserves to look and feel this good. Our mission is to share with you the same joy and transformation state-of-the art electrolysis has brought to our lives.

We are so happy you are here and hope you'll join our Prickly Pear family! Just by reading this, you’ve already become an important part of our story.

We’re looking forward to seeing you very soon!

Why choose Prickly Pear for electrolysis?

Accredited Training

At a minimum, seek out an electrologist that has completed a certification program from an accredited electrology school (not just a two-day course but multiple weeks of real learning). This will ensure the person you are working with has a significant knowledge of anatomy and the skin, as well as hygiene , safety, and all things relating to electrolysis.

  • At Prickly Pear, we can easily check this box. Both Kelley and Roroc have together completed over 840 hours of accredited training through the prestigious Académie Dectro in Quebec, Canada and Dectro’s partner school, the Academy of Advanced Electrolysis Studies in Houston, Texas.  Dectro International is a recognized leader in hair removal and aesthetics care; their academic programs set the gold standard for electrolysis training.

Board Certification

Seek out electrologists that have board certification.  Board certifications are important because they require ongoing maintenance in the form of continuing education units (CEUs).  This demonstrates your electrologist is committed to staying on top of the latest developments in the field and continuously expanding their professional knowledge and skillset.

  • Kelley is both a CPE (Certified Professional Electrologist) through the American Electrology Association and a CCE (Certified Clinical Electrologist) through the Society for Clinical & Medical Hair Removal.  She also has a bachelor’s degree from University of North Texas.

  • Roroc is a CCE (Certified Clinical Electrologist) through the Society for Clinical & Medical Hair Removal.  He also has a bachelor’s degree from University of Phoenix.

In addition to periodic examination, we regularly attend in-person courses, online training, lectures, and seminars, etc. to maintain our professional designations.  It’s important to us to provide that extra reassurance to our clients because we want you to know we care and are striving to be the very best!

Professional & Clean Clinics

Don’t ever be afraid to set-up a consultation and see for yourself what a skincare clinic looks like before agreeing to receive services.  Signs of a well-run electrology practice include:

  • A clinic that has a waiting room in addition to private treatment rooms.

  • Professional and courteous staff — this is a non-negotiable!

  • Electrologists that take the time to wash their hands before putting on disposable gloves at the start of every appointment.

  • Treatment tables that are appropriately sanitized and draped (with either linen or paper) for each client.

  • The use of medical-grade, single-use, sterile probes (that are disposed of properly at the end your session).

  • Discussion with all new clients about how electrolysis works, pricing of sessions, and how you’ll work together to achieve your goals.

  • General clinic cleanliness; if the surfaces you can see are spotless and tidy, it’s a good sign that everything you can’t is clean as well.

At a minimum, the clinic should appear clean and organized, and don’t hesitate to ask how the electrologist actually sterilizes their tools and equipment too.  Things like tweezers should be put through an ultrasonic machine with enzymatic detergent before being packaged in paper sterilization pouches and autoclaved, and the treatment cart and table should be wiped after every client with a hospital-grade sanitizer without exception.  Your electrologist should not hesitate to show you their sterilization equipment and talk you though the process when asked.

We have taken care of all the above and more to ensure a very safe, professional clinical setting. Please let us know if you ever want to see anything; we’d be happy to take you on a tour of our back room where we sterilize our tools daily.

We’re committed to bringing you the very best electrolysis because you deserve nothing less. See you very soon!
