Electrolysis — a beauty treatment worth attention

For many women, a monthly allowance for beauty — including things like hair, nails, and makeup — is a non-negotiable necessity.  But whether you consider yourself low-maintenance, high-maintenance, or #WokeUpLikeThis for real, swapping out regular spend on things like mani-pedis, waxing, or facials for longer-term beauty treatments like electrolysis, permanent makeup, and facial fillers (e.g. Botox), can be very freeing and just makes good sense!

Beauty treatments add up quickly

A typical monthly beauty budget may include:

  • Hair — $100

  • Nails — $80 (mani/pedi)

  • Facial — $100

  • Tanning - $60

  • Brows — $15 (shaping or tinting)

  • Waxing — $60+

If you were to do all of these, your spend would be just over $400 a month; the one thing these treatments all have in common (besides making you feel more radiant and confident), is their effect is only temporary, so you’ll likely need to repeat them every few weeks.

Before you start questioning your life choices, what if instead of that mani-pedi or tanning session, you invested in something longer-lasting?   Something that saved you money over your lifetime and precious time getting ready every day? And something that made you a little more pandemic-proof in case you find yourself under another crazy stay-at-home order?

Invest better!

This is why we love electrolysis so much!  Instead of waxing for the rest of your life, you can get electrolysis and be done with your unwanted hair forever!  It’s also affordable and easily worked into any beauty budget, especially if you’re willing to DIY nails for a few months while you’re investing in electrolysis.

Now, before you start thinking “what about about laser hair removal?” we want you to know that electrolysis is the only 100% permanent form of hair removal recognized by the FDA.  In contrast, laser is only approved for hair reduction, and unfortunately, we have a lot of clients at Prickly Pear that paid handsomely for laser hair removal only to find their hair grew back within a few years.  If you’re curious to know more about anything hair removal related, book a free 30 minute consultation with us, and we’ll walk you through all things related to pilosity (which is just a fancy word for hair).

What you should know about electrolysis

Cost: $90 for 60 minutes; typically we can remove unwanted hair on the chin, lips, and cheeks in an hour (sometimes less).

Lasts: Long-term, permanent.  Clients may sometimes have new hair growth that occurs years after their sessions have ended (usually due to hormonal shifts), but those areas can be quickly touched-up with electrolysis should it ever be needed again.

Who should do it: Electrolysis works universally for people with any hair and skin color - including white, light blonde and red hair.  In contrast, laser is recommended for people with fair skin and coarse, dark hair (because it’s attracted to pigment and again, it’s not permanent hair removal, so you can expect regrowth).

Why do it: Hate shaving, tweezing, and waxing?  Electrolysis is for you!  You can get treatment done essentially anywhere you grow hair — legs, face, bikini, underarms, etc.  There is a slight tingling or pinching feeling with electrolysis — similar to tweezing but certainly less than the feeling of getting waxed! And, we have numbing creams if you need them (but most of our clients say electrolysis is very tolerable without it).

Know before you go: Because your body grows hair in cycles, only 20% of your hair is actively growing and visible at any given time.  This means it may take 5+ sessions to get rid of your hair completely.  Also, you may have redness and swelling for a day or more after electrolysis. If you have a darker complexion, you will also need to be careful about sun exposure for a few days, to avoid any hyperpigmentation that may occur (brown spots).

See you in the salon very soon!
