Tame your hormonal hair issues with electrolysis

All women have facial and body hair, but the hair is usually fine and light in color.  If you have excessive or unwanted hair on your face, arms, chest, or back that is coarse and dark, the cause is often hormonal, and it’s something that generally runs in families.  The good news is that the excess hair itself isn’t dangerous, but we understand that it may be making you feel self-conscious.  If you’re tired of the daily upkeep through shaving, and you’re ready for something better, electrolysis is the only 100% permanent form of hair removal recognized by the FDA, and it works great for hormonal hair growth due to conditions like PCOS.

Permanently soft, smooth skin is possible!

Battling unwanted body and facial hair can be a long-term challenge, but the good news is people generally respond well to treatment.  If you suspect you may have a hormonal issue like PCOS or that your hair growth is a side effect of a medication you may be taking, you should see your doctor right away and work with him or her to make sure things are in sync.

You can also start electrolysis to permanently remove your unwanted hair.  We want to take a moment and make a distinction between laser and electrolysis that is important for you to understand.  Laser is only recognized by the FDA as a method of hair reduction, which means your hair is likely to grow back after some time.  At Prickly Pear, we unfortunately see many clients who have had expensive laser treatments only to see their unwanted hair return, and it is only then that they learn electrolysis is the only way to permanently get rid of their hair.

PCOS may cause you to continually grow new hair

Hormonal conditions that cause hirsutism such as PCOS or adrenal gland disorders may require a lifelong commitment to maintain, even though your hair is being permanently destroyed with electrolysis.  This is because hormones can cause your body to continually activate dormant hair follicles that may have never grown hair in the past to suddenly start sprouting.  Once your hair growth is sufficiently under control, however, you will need to see your electrologist less often to maintain a smooth appearance.

Tweezing will only make your problem worse

One method of hair removal that can make things worse for you if you have PCOS (or even if you don’t) is tweezing or any similar method like waxing, threading, or sugaring.  When you pull a hair by its root, your body notices that the hair was not sufficiently stable in the hair follicle, so the next hair it attempts to grow will be stronger and thicker!  And if that wasn’t horrifying enough, plucking can also activate dormant hair follicles in the area that are not growing hair to suddenly start producing it — so you will see more and more hair over time.

Shaving is always recommended

If you’re bummed that tweezing and the like could make your hair issues worse and you’re wondering what to do next, shaving is your best temporary option.  Yes, shaving requires that you maintain your hair more frequently (sometimes daily), but since you’re only cutting your hair at the surface of the skin, you’re not signaling to your body to produce more and stronger hair!  And, shaving is expedient — it doesn’t take long and provides immediate gratification.

It’s perfectly ok to shave your face

Some people are nervous to try shaving their face.  They’ve heard the old wives tales that shaving will make their hair darker and/or thicker.  Let us reassure you that nothing is farther from the truth.  As long as you do not disturb the root of the hair, you can trim and shave your face to your heart’s content without any negative affect to the hair.  Sometimes people will say after shaving, they feel like the hair is more prominent.  This is because your hair, instead of being at different lengths and having a tapered end is now all growing at the same length.  If this feeling bothers you, feel free to shave more often while you’re working with us to permanently eliminate your hair through electrolysis.  As an added bonus, shaving your face is similar to dermaplaning as it gently exfoliates the skin, leaving it softer and smoother!

If you’re struggling with excessive hair growth, electrolysis is the hair removal solution you’ve been seeking.  It works universally for everyone regardless of hair and skin color, it’s affordable, and it’s permanent!

We hope to see you in the salon very soon, because we believe everyone deserves to look and feel their best, and nothing makes us feel more joy than helping our clients overcome hormonal hair issues!
