You should almost never tweeze

When you see an out of place hair on your body, it’s tempting grab the tweezers. Before you go pluck-happy, there’s two important things you should know.

Stronger & Thicker Hair

First, when you pull a hair by the root, it comes back stronger and thicker.  Your skin is naturally designed to grow hair, so when you pluck, your skin gets the message loud and clear that the hair wasn’t sufficient. Because it was yanked out, it builds the next hair stronger and thicker.  If your goal in life is to have really strong and thick hair, pluck as much as you want!  But for most of us, this defeats the whole purpose of tweezing (and waxing for that matter).  And if this wasn’t bad enough, there’s another very good reason to never tweeze, so read on!

More Hair May Grow

Second, tweezing may stimulate hair follicles immediately in the tweezed area that would not otherwise grow hair in your lifetime.  Yes, you read that right.  Tweezing may cause you to grow more and more hair in an area, compounding your fuzziness over time.  We’ve helped many clients who innocently started plucking at a young age only to realize years later that their few stray hairs had somehow turned into a beard and was requiring hours in tweezing and upkeep every week.  If this is you, don’t panic — electrolysis can definitely resolve it, even years after the fact.

Eyebrows are the Exception

Eyebrows are the one place on your body where tweezers may be acceptable, but even this gets tricky.  For better or worse, eyebrow hair is very sensitive to trauma — and repeated tweezing can permanently damage the hair follicle, causing your brow hair to stop growing altogether.  This may be beneficial if your brows are thick, and you know exactly how you want them shaped.  It can be difficult, however, if you over-pluck and decide later you want them fuller or a different shape.  It may be worthwhile to avoid tweezing even in this area and leave your brows to the experts!

Safe Alternatives to Tweezing

We hope you’ve decided to break-up with your tweezers immediately, but now you may be wondering, “what should I do to tame my unwanted hair if I can’t tweeze?”  Good question!  We recommend trimming, shaving, those little electric lipstick razors and using cream depilatories!  Anything that cuts the hair versus pulling it by the root is totally safe and will not cause the issues mentioned above.  By the way, waxing, sugaring, and threading are just as bad a tweezing, so make sure you avoid those too!

Come see us as soon as you can for electrolysis, the only 100% permanent form of hair removal, so we can take care of that prickly hair FOREVER and eliminate the temptation to tweeze!
