Underarms are something we’re often asked about here at Prickly Pear.  We think partly because it’s one of the most annoying places on the body to be fuzzy, and partly because we live in a warm climate here in Texas, which means spaghetti-strap tops and dresses are appropriate almost year-round!

Electrolysis is your best solution!

Shaving your armpits is easy to do, but this temporary method of hair removal doesn’t last long — and armpit hair is thick, so once it breaks the skin’s surface, it’s noticeable and often feels prickly!  If daily maintenance isn’t your thing, and you’re ready for a serious upgrade from shaving, electrolysis is your best solution!

Underarm hair is some of the deepest on your body.  We’ve seen lots of clients who have had good results with laser on their legs but are coming to us later for electrolysis under their arms, because laser just didn’t work for them .  The depth of the hair is the issue.  Lasers only reach nanometers into the skin - and it’s often not enough to treat the deeper hair in your underarm (or bikini areas).

With electrolysis, we insert a small probe into the natural opening of the skin that’s capable of reaching the bottom of your deepest hair follicles and destroying the germinative cells responsible for hair growth.

Underarm FAQs

Is it painful?

Most clients will say that they feel a tingling or a small pinch each time we pulse the hair, and that it’s not an intolerable experience.  Occasionally, we have a sensitive client that feels more — when this happens, we typically schedule short appointments and ask the client to come more frequently.  If you’re interested in underarms, we’ll find a way to make it a more comfortable experience.

Can electrolysis help underarm skin that has gotten darker?

If the skin under your arms has become darker over the years, it’s typically because the prickly hair in that area is irritating the skin as it grows out.  When you remove the hair completely, your skin will often heal and return to a more normal color.

I have welts under my arms after I shave. Will electrolysis help?

The quick answer is yes!  Welts are usually caused by ingrown hair and inflammation of hair follicle due to shaving.  When you eliminate shaving altogether, you eliminate the painful welts too!

Can electrolysis reduce the amount I sweat under my arms?

Surprisingly, the answer is yes!  Electrolysis not only destroys the germinative cells that cause hair growth, but it also destroys the sweat glands that are in your hair follicle.  You also have sweat glands not associated with your hair follicles, so you’ll still sweat but noticeably less after electrolysis! In our humble opinion, this is a nice bonus when you get electrolysis under the arms!

How long will it take?

The short answer is, “it depends.”

In the beginning, we’ll want you to come every couple of weeks for electrolysis sessions, so we can catch as many hairs as possible while they’re actively growing (which is when we have the best opportunity to destroy the cells responsible for hair growth).  As we see less and less hair, we’ll space out your appointments more, until there is no more underarm hair.

Every body is different, however. How quickly we’re able to permanently stop your hair from growing will depend on a few things including your pilosity (how much hair you have), your sensitivity to electrolysis, how you’ve removed the unwanted hair in the past (waxing versus shaving or depilatories, etc.), and how hydrated you are at the time of your appointment, etc.

We’ve invested in the most powerful yet comfortable epilators available in the market (the Apilus xCell) to achieve results for you as quickly as possible, but your process will be unique and could take several months to a year, which isn’t much time when compared to shaving almost daily for the rest of your life.
